December 23, 2010

Thursday, December 23rd was another hectic day. A full day of work, and because of the upcoming Christmas holiday, my wife and I decided to take in a movie on the 23rd, since Christmas Eve and Christmas day were out.

December 19-22, 2010

I climbed the stairs in the house December 19th through December 22nd.

December 18, 2010

The next day, Saturday, December 18th, I ran the 5K race in the morning, and then climbed my stairs in the afternoon.

What to do about the number of flights climbed?

Instead of doing the 17 flights I was scheduled to do the previous day, I did 18 instead.

This started a pattern of 'catching up' on missed days, of which there were few.

December 17, 2010

Friday, December 17th life caught up with me---I worked a full day, and I had a 5K to run the next morning and I promised my wife Olive Garden. I took my first day off from the stairs.

December 15-17, 2010

I did 15 flights on December 15th and 16 flights on December 17th.

December 14, 2010

On December 14th, instead of doing 13 flights of stairs, I did 14---adding 2 flights instead of 1.

9 Flights and counting

On December 10th, I did 9 flights. Apparently, I also had time to drive to Drexel University to pick up my son Kevin, and either on the way there, or the way back, I took this beautiful picture of the Bell Atlantic Tower, the building we would be climbing on our Stair Climb on March 19th.

I added 1 flight of stairs every day through December 13th, when I did 12 flights of stairs.

Something was bothering me.

I wanted the flights of stairs I was climbing to equal the day of the month---strange I know, but it would make it easier for me to know how many I was doing on a particular day.

Believe me when I say I'm literally just sitting in my chair, reading and answering emails, working on a computer program, teaching an Internet class when suddenly I get up, head to the stairs and start climbing them.

In December of 2010 I didn't put a lot of thought into the process which meant simplifying even the process of knowing how many flights of stairs to climb was a big thing to me.

8 Flights

And so, on December 9th, I did 8 flights of stairs in my house.

It's a start--7 Flights of Stairs in the house

On December 8th of 2010, I started training.

I thought of driving to a high rise, but anything really high is in mid-town Philadelphia (Philadelphia natives refer to that as Center City), with expensive limited parking, I discounted that possibility.

I live in New Jersey and there are limited high rises near me--mostly apartments.

Time was ticking away when I decided to climb up my stairs until I got tired.

Climb up my stairs?

Yes, that's right, the stairs in my house.

It wasn't long before I was tired---7 flights and I stopped.

If you don't believe me, you can check my You Tube video of the 7 flights here...

If you check out the You Tube video, you can see I did 7 flights of stairs, accompanied by the strange looks of our dog Madison, and the sounds of my wife making a delicious dinner.

7 flights up, 7 flights down. 14 steps up. 14 steps down.

I decided not to count the down steps, so I entered 98 (7 times 14) in my spreadsheet. (Always record your exercise, it's one of my tips that you'll read about later.)

7 flights didn't seem like a lot, but I wanted to make sure I could do 8 the following day.

8? Where did I come up with that number?

Well, somewhere on the stairs, I got the bright idea to add 1 flight of stairs to my training every day until I got to something?

Something being perhaps the number of flights in the building that the actual climb was taking place (50).

Something being perhaps the number of steps in the building that the actual climb was taking place (1,088)

Perhaps some kind of round number like 100 flights of stairs in the house.
